This month we caught up with Louise and Tim Rødkjær Spedding from Flora who run the most gorgeous cafe, bakery and restaurant on the historic and unspoilt Trelowarren Estate, in the Lizard Peninsula, Cornwall…
Serving delicious seasonal food grown by themselves or their network of small growers, farmers, fisherfolk and foragers, Flora offers the finest real cuisine from what is known as ‘The New Yard’.
Louise explains “We have only been operating on the Trelowarren Estate for about a year now. We are a small operation, making everything from scratch – Flora is a bakery, cafe and restaurant with an attached walled garden, with our own chickens! The estate is a very special place and has captivated our imaginations. We hope to do really well here :)”
Personal friends of our Founder – Sara from Shore Stays, Sara has helped out at a few of Louise and Tims’ outside catering events when she can, and has certainly enjoyed sun-downers on the beach whilst they cook up a storm for friends.
This incredible couple really do incapsulate the essence of fresh, locally grown/caught food. The taste is just out of this world!
So when they are not baking or cooking, what do they love to do in their downtime and where do they go for food and drink? Louise explains – “We go to the beach, hang out with our children and go foraging.
Our favourite place to eat is at home, in the garden, as we rarely get to do that. Or we love to take a picnic to the beach. The best place for coffee is a small place called Loft in Coverack, plus Cast in Helston do a very delicious and simple lunch. We never get to go out to dinner :)!”
Whats your favourite place in Cornwall and why? “Oh so many places to choose from… Lizard Point is pretty special as there are small coves found on the Lizard.”
Flora is open to all and Louise and Tim welcome you to visit. If you’d like a taste of Flora (and believe us, it is worth it!), breakfast and lunch are served Thursday – Sunday, 9am – 3pm, and dinner is served Friday and Saturdays between 6pm – 10pm.
